The Book Tower on Washington Boulevard in Detriot is like no other. It is a piece of the cities skyline. A renaissance style architecture is on the oldest buildings in the city. Francis Palms had purchased a lot of land on Washington Boulevard. He was one of the cities wealthiest men. In 1916 his grandsons wanted to turn the street into an upscale area. Detroit’s elite of the 1930s loved the big-band sound. Musicians like Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, the Dorseys and Cab Calloway were popular. The Vanity Ballroom opened in 1929, and it was the place to see and be seen.
The Vanity Ballroom was a magnificent building, built with an Aztec theme, which incorporated an Art Deco style. The 5,000 foot maple dance floor, accessed by using a massive grand staircase, welcomed up to 2,000 people five nights a week. Dancers enjoyed Read the rest of this entry »

One of the most beautiful ballparks in major league baseball is Comerica Park. This home to the Detroit Tigers is one of the newer parks in baseball. The entrance to this gorgeous park is located near Fox Theater and between two historical churches. As you walk through the park you will notice the eight statues of great Tigers such as Al Kaline or Ty Cobb. The Belle Isle Aquarium is located in Detroit, Michigan. It opened back in 1904 and at the time of its closure in 2005 was the longest open Aquarium in the continent.
It was closed on April 5, 2005 due to low attendance. It was costing the city 500,000 a year, and faced with mounting deficits, they could no longer afford the cost. In August of that year, the citizens of Detroit voted to reopen the aquarium by a margin of 88-12, however it remains closed to date.
