Uncover The Past With The Broderick Tower

November 4th, 2011 by admin

Eaton Tower was constructed between 1926 and 1928. It was the second tallest sky scraper in Michigan with 34 floors. This tower was named after Theodore Eaton Jr. who was a Detroit importer of chemicals and dyes. In 1945 a Detroit insurance broker, David Broderick bought the tower and renamed it Broderick Tower. Mr. Broderick passed away in 1955. Between 1963 and 1976 ownership of the tower changed many times. In 1976, the Higgins family of Detroit purchased part ownership of the tower. During its history from 1928 to 1976 there have been many restaurants, bars, grills, and clubs in the tower. Currently The Sports Town Grill has the ground floor of the tower.

Recent renovations have started on Broderick Tower with completion scheduled by September 2012. The tower will house 105-115 rental apartments on the floors 5 to 34. Floors 2 through 4 will be home to offices, retail shops and entertainment.

The rear of the building is mural of a humpback whale that was painted by a Detroit artist, Wyland. This mural was later covered over by a billboard. In June of 2010 a storm tore down the billboard and once again the mural is in public view.
