When traveling through Detroit, there is more than just the beautiful sky line to enjoy. The motor city has long been known for having some great sites to visit. Just a mere three miles from the motor city is one of the best sites in this area. The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, is a full of botanical gardens that includes, rare flowers for one to enjoy. There is not charge to see the beauty of the tranquil gardens; however they are only open from 10 am till 5 pm daily.Didn’t catch that? This explains it. A tour here, will take one roughly 30 minutes.

Remodeled in 1980, this conservatory has become a frequent stop on many tourists’ lists. If one likes orchids, they will be in for a treat. This location houses the largest display of orchids in the entire nation. This large conservatory covers more than an acre of ground. On one side they are growing tropical things like bananas, sugar cane and oranges, while on the other side; they are producing a large selection of ferns and succulents.

This beautiful garden is managed by the City of Detroit Recreation. The Belle Isle Botanical Society is a large supporter of the conservatory. Volunteers from this society donate many hours, in helping keep this beautiful place running and in stunning shape. Started in 1904, this conservatory has undergone many changes through the years. It was named after a very special lady, Mrs. Anna Scripps Whitcomb. In her will, she bequeathed her entire collection of prize orchids; there were 600 plants in all. In honor of Anna, the facilities were soon named in her honor. Guests visiting the site today can gaze at the beauty of mother earth.
