Eaton Tower was constructed between 1926 and 1928. It was the second tallest sky scraper in Michigan with 34 floors. This tower was named after Theodore Eaton Jr. who was a Detroit importer of chemicals and dyes. In 1945 a Detroit insurance broker, David Broderick bought the tower and renamed it Broderick Tower. Mr. Broderick passed away in 1955. Between 1963 and 1976 ownership of the tower changed many times. In 1976, the Higgins family of Detroit purchased part ownership of the tower. During its history from 1928 to 1976 there have been many restaurants, bars, grills, and clubs in the tower. Currently The Sports Town Grill has the ground floor of the tower.

Recent renovations have started on Broderick Tower with completion scheduled by September 2012. The tower will house 105-115 rental apartments on the floors 5 to 34. Floors 2 through 4 will be home to offices, retail shops and entertainment.

The rear of the building is mural of a humpback whale that was painted by a Detroit artist, Wyland. This mural was later covered over by a billboard. In June of 2010 a storm tore down the billboard and once again the mural is in public view.

The Motor City is once again alive and ready to entertain locals. Although the city has experienced ups and downs, it can still hold up to its reputation of being a popular nightlife destination. Locals may be familiar with a old club called Cliff Bell’s. They will be surprised to know that is has been renovated and is ready to entertain guest.

History of Cliff Bell’s

Cliff Bell’s is a jazz club that began in a Detroit neighborhood in 1935. The owner Cliff Bell was an ambitious entrepreneur that contributed to the club’s success until he retired in 1958. The club continued to run and entertain guest until 1985.

Renovation of Cliff Bell’s

After 20 years of vacancy, Paul Howard, Scott Lowell, and Carolyn Howard decided to make renovations, which brought the club back to life. The club currently features drinks, tasty cuisines, art-deco interior and live jazz.

The former owner Cliff Bell has entertained guest with his trendy club. Although he has retired, his legacy still lives on threw the recently renovated club that brings life to the neighborhood. Residents that remember the club when it was in its prime should come down and experience the new Cliff Bell’s.

If you are traveling in Illinois there is a interesting attraction that should not be missed. In a graveyard in Geneva, Illinois there is a giant stone shaped like a easy chair. This grave marker was put in place in many years ago by Mr. and Mrs Naylor. The chair is life size and can actually be sat on. There is a small engraving on the back that simply says “pals”. No one knows why such a grave marker was used, however it may be that the people buried underneath the chair simply wanted a place for people to rest while visiting their graves.Confused? Here ‘s a little help . Other theories are that Mrs. Naylor was insane at the time of her death and this is the reason for the easy chair. However, the chair was not put into place until 30 years later when Mr. Naylor passed away.

The mystery lives on at Oak Hill cemetery. Possibly you can add to the theories by visiting this amazing gravestone and giving your theory of why it was used by Mr. and Mrs. Naylor as their gravestone. Have your picture taken sitting in the chair and and bring home the mystery of the stone easy chair. Possibly you can think of a better explanation than anyone else.

Motor City is an amazing place and it’s skyline has been featured in more than one motion picture. If you’re scrolling through the direct star tv channels this weekend keep an eye out for Detroit in some of these hit films.
8 Mile: Perhaps a little grittier than most, 8 Mile shows the town in a whole new light. Eminem is the pride of Detroit and he certainly pays homage to his roots so it’s worth a watch to see the city shine.
Dreamgirls: It’s a historical account of Detroit in the 50s and there’s a lot to be said for the treatment of the race-relations story in this movie. Either way, it shows Detroit back in its glory days and it makes for a really nostalgic look at the town.
Four Brothers: Starring a great mix of stars (including Mark Whalberg), Four Brothers is a cop film with heart that shows off Detroit in a real light. It’s not always pretty but they’re all about town which makes for a fun viewing experience if you’re in it for the scenery.

The Book Tower on Washington Boulevard in Detriot is like no other. It is a piece of the cities skyline. A renaissance style architecture is on the oldest buildings in the city. Francis Palms had purchased a lot of land on Washington Boulevard. He was one of the cities wealthiest men. In 1916 his grandsons wanted to turn the street into an upscale area. They first built the Book Building, which was named after them, the Book brothers. It was a 13 story Italian Renaissance office building. It opened in 1917. They continued to build skyscrapers along the boulevard. On the first piece of property their grandfather purchased, they built the Book Tower. A 475 foot high building, it was the tallest building in town until the Penobscot Building was built two years later. It was named after an American Indian Tribe in England. Today the Book Tower remains the seventh tallest building in town. From the ground to the top floor, the building is covered in detail. It has nude female figures in the midsection. They have been rudiculed and critized by critics from the start. Still the building gives the Washington Boulevard a unique charm today. You can not go down the boulevard without noticing it.

Detroit’s elite of the 1930s loved the big-band sound. Musicians like Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, the Dorseys and Cab Calloway were popular. The Vanity Ballroom opened in 1929, and it was the place to see and be seen.
The Vanity Ballroom was a magnificent building, built with an Aztec theme, which incorporated an Art Deco style. The 5,000 foot maple dance floor, accessed by using a massive grand staircase, welcomed up to 2,000 people five nights a week. Dancers enjoyed dancing the night away in the Aztec temple complete with rich earth-toned colors and walls containing Aztec symbols, which allowed dancers to feel the bounce in the floor. The 1930s was the time of the Great Depression, but those who entered here were quickly whisked into a different era, all for the cost of 35 cents. From its opening in 1929 to 1958, the Vanity Ballroom was expertly managed by Edward J. Strata.
The building then sat empty for five long years. It sprang back to life in 1964 to welcome numerous concerts weekly. However, the Vanity Ballroom could not survive the conditions in Detroit after the riots of 1967 and closed again. The property was left to fall into disrepair. Ronald and Donald Murphy attempted to revive the club in 1983, but gave up a year later. Again in 1986, there was an attempt to reopen the Vanity Ballroom. This time the Vanity Ballroom opened as a Caribbean-style club. However, the neighborhood had become so uncivil that the club did not survive.

One of the most beautiful ballparks in major league baseball is Comerica Park. This home to the Detroit Tigers is one of the newer parks in baseball. The entrance to this gorgeous park is located near Fox Theater and between two historical churches. As you walk through the park you will notice the eight statues of great Tigers such as Al Kaline or Ty Cobb. You may look up and notice the enormous scoreboard with two fearsome tigers perched on top. As you look at the stretching grass of the field, there is a line of distinctive dirt known as the keyhole between pitchers mound and home plate.Check out this link here. This stadium, equipped with both a Ferris wheel and carousal is a great trip for the whole family. One of its’ other great features is a fountain located behind center field. This fountain erupts with what is known as liquid fireworks every time A Tiger hits a home run. As you sit to enjoy the game, you will notice the absolutely stunning skyline surrounding the outfield. This skyline will give you the feel of what Detroit is all about. So, next time your in Detroit stop by this amazing stadium, You will truly know what it feels like to be in the heart of a city that can make you feel like your home.

The Belle Isle Aquarium is located in Detroit, Michigan. It opened back in 1904 and at the time of its closure in 2005 was the longest open Aquarium in the continent.
It was closed on April 5, 2005 due to low attendance. It was costing the city 500,000 a year, and faced with mounting deficits, they could no longer afford the cost. In August of that year, the citizens of Detroit voted to reopen the aquarium by a margin of 88-12, however it remains closed to date.
In January of 2005, several residents of Detroit started the Friends of the Belle Isle Aquarium in an effort to keep it open. When that failed, the group switched its focus to reopening the site. They continue operations today and have a website that has information about donating to the organization. They also have a Facebook page.
The building is essentially closed now, but in the winter, it is home to Goldfish and Koi that live in an outside pond during the rest of the year. It also opens every February, when it plays host to “Shiver on the River”, a fundraiser for such groups as the Friends of the Belle Isle Aquarium.
